Life in the office, and out of it.

So I was just thinking to myself how much I hate it when the ladies in my office talk about movies, because it drives me crazy how they say, "Oh yea, I saw World of Wars, it was okay, the ending was stupid though; like what? The aliens just died?" Or "I saw Batman, that new one. It was so violent, and really dark. I liked George Clooney better than that new guy." Oh my fucking god? Are you people retarded?? Christian Bale is like...a god! No, he is one! And this morning, "Oh, I saw a really good movie last night. I loved it." What was it? "Stealth."
...
Right.
I think I'm a movie nazi. But it's not because I only like those stupid movies all the smart people and emo kids like, such as the ones listed in a previous entry. But at least I know the difference between a movie that is good, because it's so bad it's good (ex. Drumline) and a movie that's just plain bad because it thinks it's good (ex. Hellboy). I will see anything too. And I cry in most movies, cuz I like to get into them. I like chick flicks and comedies and dramas and animated movies. I just love to watch movies, cuz I'm an escapist. Oh except not horror movies because I have nightmares. Yea, I saw The Ring and had to sleep with the light on for like 2 weeks. I'm a suck.
Oh! my point! So I was sitting here thinking about how much I hate their movie conversations, and what do they do? Start talking about movies. This fact has me worried, because I constantly think that people can read my mind. I walk down the street and then see someone wearing something hideous and think to myself, "Jesus Christ! Who let you out of the house like that?" But then, I get all paranoid that they can read my thoughts, so I add, "Though it's very courageous of you to be in public. You go girlfriend." And then look away nervously. Am I the only person who is paranoid about this?

no, I occasionally find myself doing similar mental apologies. Though mostly mine are accusitory, something to the effect of "I know you can read my mind, arn't you special. Please leave me alone." I think the rational is that my awareness of it would startle them into compliance. I often wonder if it works.

I have this same issue with television. I don't have cable or satellite and I simply don't watch television. Well, I take that back - I watch King of the Hill and the Simpsons while making/eating dinner. But, that's it. So, when people go on and on about television shows and try to include me in their conversations, I'm almost apologetic that I don't watch any of it. And, honestly, it all seems to me a complete waste of time. I'd much rather watch a movie. I am a big movie freak. But, cheesy tv shows just don't cut it for me. Also, I have a very odd sense of humor and most of what I like, I find the majority of the drones I work with either have no clue as to what I'm talking about or look at me as if I have two heads - like "how could you like that movie, it was awful" sorta thing. That's my story anyway.

I watch CSI and Star Trek and Buffy (or did watch Buffy). Because I am uber nerd! What's your favourite movie? Or better, what are some of your favourite movies?

It's hard to name one favorite. I watch a lot of movies. I recently saw The Life Aquatic and was surprised at how much I liked it. I like good horror films - not the slash 'em up kind, but the ghost/supernatural kind. I thought the Ring was good, but the book was even better. American Psycho was cool. I like Christian Bale. Did you ever see Velvet Goldmine? Willem Defoe is another favorite of mine. I just saw Boondock Saints and he was really good in that. I also like comedies...believe it or not, but I never get tired of watching Dumb and Dumber or Anchorman. I really like the Lord of the Rings movies (I'm a nerd). Oh, and I also love old black & white films like It's a Wonderful Life.

This is what happens when I'm bored at work and the boss is on vaca.

Hmm... I saw The life Aquatic with my dad, and I didn't like it. Maybe because I was expecting the greatness that is The Royal Tenenbaums and Mount Rushmore. And it wasn't really there. Christian Bale in American Psycho is amazing. American Psycho is such a fantastic movie. Of course I saw Velvet Goldmine! Willem Defoe is so creepy he's great. I own Boondock Saints and wish I was Irish and had guns and shit. Your comedic tastes do not align themselves with my own. Lord of the Rings is awesome. So is Star Wars. Anything that preserves that classic chivalry thing has my vote. I also like old movies, old musicals really. I love Bing Crosby like whoa. When I was younger, people used to ask me who my favourite singer was, and I'd say Bing Crosby.

I meant Rushmore. Not Mount Rushmore.

This is hilarious because I haven't thought of it in years and years, but when I was younger, I used to have the same paranoia that people could read my mind and then want to do some violence on me or something.

It's been years since I thought that way, but I never would have guessed that anyone else suffered from the same sort of neurosis.

Christian Bale is a God and his Batman is the only true Batman. He has traveled through time to save us all. Your coworkers are obviously being punished enough, though, by their movie choices.

Oh and I love Hellboy if only because of my great love for Ron Perlman.

I used to think people could read my mind all the time. This would especially be silly because I would be like, "Maybe they'll find out that I'm a bank robber," and well ... I'm not a bank robber, but maybe I didn't know I was a bank robber. Then I stopped caring.

I blame that song from the Sesame Street-esque episode of The Chappelle Show where Charlie Murphy sings a song I think is called, "Fuck it." I tried to embrace that as a life philosophy.

It is bad to not care about anything. To say fuck it to everything. Well, or so I think it is. But it might be working for you. I was going to say, "But who am I to judge?" but then realized I wasn't judging. I only judge people by their shoes. Not their lifestyle choices and philosophies. (Is that how you pluralize that word?)

[info]face_dance

August 3 2005, 20:34:31 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah, taken to an extreme, the "Fuck it" lifestyle will probably be detrimental. I like to interpret it more along the lines of Lone Wolf and Cub, where Itto Ogami once explained to some would-be assassins, "You do everything you can and then leave the rest to karma."

By which I interpret that as meaning I try not to worry, especially about mind-readers.

Uh ... Internet, is that how you pluralize "philosophy?"

Yes.

Thanks Internet. I judge people by their movies, sci-fi authors, and comic books.

Love Actually
Rebecca (1940)
Unbreakable - I like all the M. Knight Shamalanananabanana movies
Capturing the Friedmans - documentary
The Tingler (1959)
It Came From Outer Space (1951)
He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not - french film
Evolution - goofy, but I liked it
Amelie

The Last Temptation of Christ
Suicide Kings
Welcome to the Dollhouse
Bowling for Columbine
Unfaithful - I love the part where Richard Gere uses the snowglobe as a weapon

Down With Love - goofy, but fun
Bridget Jones's Diary
Soylent Green & Planet of the Apes - excellent movies
The Virgin Suicides
Chocolat
Hedwig and the Angry Inch

I think the above list is a sufficient way to end a completely non-productive day!

PS: My philosophy on life is "abandon all hope" which might be the polite way of saying "fuck it." In fact, I think it is...

Re: more movies

Haha, I tried to spell M. Night Shamalahjhgkahgs name today too, and ended up with quite the same effect. Your choices in movies is quite good. If I ever listed my favourite movies, it woudl take me too long and then I'd end up forgetting stuff and updating it every 10 minutes, so I congradulate you for taking the time to make a semi-list. fantastic, well done. kudos. bahaha kudos. what a stupid word.
anyway.

You just expressed EXACTLY how I feel. And Christian Bale, um, if anyone thinks he is NOT a god, well they need to have their head examined. I watched his first film the other night, The Empire of the Sun, and well, it shows that even at a young age, he commanded the screen. *regardless of it being a Stephen Speilberg film.

Maybe it's not that people are reading your mind, so much as you're projecting your thoughts into other people's heads...
