Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow [23 Dec 2009|11:40pm]

Shouldn't I be more panicked, right now? I mean, tomorrow morning I leave to drive eight-ten hours go north for a week, to run around DC and Philadelphia, trying to visit as much family as possible, and then to jump back in the car, and drive 10-12 hours to get back here, to work, on Tuesday. But Nah. Everything's fine.

Presents are bought, made, about to be wrapped. Car is secured. Dinner has been eaten.

Dinner was delicious, too. I made a garlic, teriyaki, ginger chicken dish, with mixed veg as a the side. Would have worked well with rice, too, or fries, but we got all fried-out, last night at the Vortex.

Anyway, I should go to bed, now. I'll see you all, tomorrow, when I make it to DC.

Good night.

Finally updated my website. Will have to add a portraiture section at some point, but not without first having some sort of cohesive reasoning behind it. Added lightbox in order to have an option to read an introduction to each series. Also removed some filler - it's time I concentrate on what it's all about. Of course, since I'm coding these on my own, it's still strictly amateur hour when it comes to the design:

There. Now you have a Yule log. From the internet.

Don't say I never gave you anything.

"The Curse of Four"

Things accomplished in fiction: Pumped someone for information, advanced the plot

Things accomplished in real life: Finally finished my Batmas shopping. (I've decided that if those "Keep Christ in Christmas" yahoos can yammer on about their savior, I can yammer about mine. Batman.)

Probably the last blog post until after the holiday.

Merry Batmas, and Gordon bless us, every one.

About My Power [23 Dec 2009|06:44pm]

warren_ellis

Musician/writer Christine Hart felt it necessary to preserve this Twitter exchange from earlier in the year:

tumblr_kv2gjkTA1f1qza9zuo1_400

I have just been informed via the power of Twitter that I’m on io9’s 2009 Science Fiction Power List, alongside, um, Lady Gaga. Actually, it’s kind of an interesting list — and an interesting, if peculiar, concept. Doubtless, by the time you read it, the comments section will have filled with snark. But the article itself is worth a read (not least because it includes Lady Gaga. I think even Bill Gibson was talking about that last video).

I’ve just been informed that Bleeding Cool will be broadcasting all through Xmas Day.

Me? I will doubtless still be ruminating on the fact that five minutes ago I was selecting children’s books for my daughter, and that apparently with the passage of no time whatsoever I am now wrapping a MOCK THE WEEK: UNCUT DVD for her. Not sure how she went from Maurice Sendak to Frankie Boyle yelling "cunt" overnight, but suddenly she’s 14 and arguing with me over rap/rock, guitarists and what the best track on the Florence & The Machine album was. It’s brilliant, frankly.

Bone China Autopsies by Beccy Ridsel [23 Dec 2009|11:21pm]
coilhouse

Fine china should be handled with care, as demonstrated by artist/sculptor Beccy Ridsel earlier this year. “This work was an installation, set up as a lab experiment in progress, complete with scalpels, lab coats, needles and a microscope. Piles of dicarded, cut-up craft objects lay about the desk, some with their innards seeping out, others rearranged, Frankenstein-style.” The purpose of Ridsel’s experiment was to find the point at which craft transforms into art, a problematic division she discusses in a post on Yatzer. She notes at the end of the article, “I am currently working on domestic variations of these pieces; the irony of [this] isn’t lost on me.”

Cybrosis [23 Dec 2009|10:16am]

Cybrosis by P.C. Haring

Recently I've been involved in a bunch of in-progress projects that I can't talk about until they go live. (I've decided that all the work I've done in 2009 that I can't talk about is going to make me look amazingly productive in 2010.) The cover I did for Cybrosis is an example of just such a project and I'm happy to say that it is now live! Cybrosis is a podcast novel by P.C. Haring and I'm pleased to say that the cover photo is mine!

I took the photograph for the cover working with Rae Winters, who is the amazing model gracing the cover. Jared Axelrod did the graphic design that makes it look so sci-fitastic. P.C. is releasing episodes now along with some of the voice best talent out there. I am so happy that he asked me to help create the cover for his novel. Thanks, P.C.!

You can download the first episode of Cybrosis here: www.cybrosisnovel.com/

Merry Christmas [23 Dec 2009|02:48pm]

Best wishes for your happiness

I have dozens of old Christmas cards that I inherited with my house but I think this one is my favourite.
I love how simple it is and the words are so lovely.  I much prefer the style of old christmas cards - they have a certain charm about them that never fails to appeal to me.

Merry Christmas everyone xx

A Softer World is putting the salt down. [23 Dec 2009|09:58am]

http://www.asofterworld.com/index.php?id=515

Seasons Greetings from all of us here A Softer World. We've had quite the year, haven't we? It's been a bit of a roller coaster. But there were peaks as well as valleys. For every unwanted pregnancy there was a fortuitous tumble down the stairs, and for every human trafficking police sting operation there was an incompetent handling of the evidence! Another year has come and gone, and neither of us have ruined our lives yet. We hope you're full of high proof cheer

roswell the artist plus some lj advisory stuff [23 Dec 2009|08:01am]

1) Had a meeting with LJ yesterday I'll type up my notes over the weekend for a progress report.

2) Since we got an enclosed back porch Roswell and Safetypin have taken up some sort of self-imposed guard duty that involves caterwauling to be let out every morning to they can check on the status of a) the bird invasion and b) whether or not that fiendish grey stray is walking through the yard (he's a rebel, I think they're secretly in love with him.) Well, since the snow fell this has been replace by c) complaining that we've opened the wrong door, they want the one without the snow please.

Finally yesterday Safetypin mustered up the nerve and went out for about 60 seconds, decided she didn't like the snow and came back in. Half an hour later Roswell worked up the nerve and walked out. The snow -- so fascinating! It must be examined!

After some time she did what any sentient, self-aware being would do and decided to use this medium for art -- to construct a cat of snow that would explain her view of the world, her emotions, her turmoil, her essence. After she constructed her art piece, she came back in -- satisfied, but a bit aloof after her triumph. We're having showings at 5:00 and 7:00 every night until it melts, with wine and cheese and cat treats.

Here is Roswell's snow sculpture:

I think it's beautiful. I'm going to get her a beret for Xmas.
